Mulch can be applied at any time of the day or year, even decorative mulching can be done at any time. Mulching protects, for weed suppression and moisture retention, also is best done before the late springs growing season and the intense summer heat. A three-inch layer of mulch naturally prevents weeds by blocking growth and access to sunlight. Mulch is specifically formulated for use around flowers, shrubs and trees. Plant first, then mulch. It may be used in organic gardens. It should not be mixed directly into the planting hole. If planting is done before mulching, make sure to water the soil to give the plant a direct soaking drink.
